There's always room for improving your boating knowledge. Safety on the lake is largely a matter of knowledge.
A choice of certificate courses for recreational boat owners is offered by Taupo Coastguard.
The courses range in scale & content from:

No courses have been planned for the next six months but should there be individuals interested in undertaking a VHF Marine Radio, Day Skipper or Boat Master course in the near future they are advised to phone Clive or Shirley on 07 377 6418 and advise them of their interest.
Subject to sufficient names being received (minimum of 6 each course) paticipants will be contacted and offered a date for a course to be run. Following discussions and satisfactory agreements a course will be run to meet the demand.
COURSES 2010
The following schedule of courses is dependent upon having sufficient numbers to conduct the listed course. Closing times are one week before course start date for the VHF Marine Radio and Day Skipper Courses, and two weeks before a Boatmaster Course. In the event of insufficient numbers those whose applications have been received and it is necessary to postpone a cource, all will have the option of transferring to the next planned course or fees returned.
Where only the month with a TBA start date is given for mid year courses, all those who have forwarded an application will be advised of the commencement date later on in the year, but there will be a little bit of leniency made to try and meet individual student commitments.
Names and addresses will be taken of interested persons, but no names will be considered starters unless a course fee has been paid in advance of start date. $20.00 admin fee if candidate cancels.
Dates must be adhered to as texts etc ordered from Auckland.
New workbooks included in all courses, only Boat Master students need to obtain special study texts and navigation equipment.

VHF Marine Radio Course

It is mandatory to hold a VHF Radio Licence if using a VHF radio in your vessel. Information on Call Signs can be obtained by calling 07 377 6418 or 0800 40 80 90.
Day Skipper Course

Boatmaster Course
Cost $275.00 + Study texts, see below...
Workbooks, Admin, Examination, Course fees, Study texts, and/or navigation equipment are extra. These include Scanlan's "Safety at Sea" ($42.00), "Rules of the Road at Sea" ($20.00), Bi-rola Protractor ($32.00) and unilever dividers ($12.50) - an additional total of $106.50 if all needed.
Coastguard members (and family members) entitled to $10.00 per person discount.
Location of all courses are at the Lake Taupo Volunteer Coastguard Maritime Centre, 14 Rauhotu Street, Nukuhau, Taupo.
